If You Ate At An American Indian Restaurant

Have you ever been to an American Indian restaurant? Even though I do not know the exact number, they do exist. Some people assume the cuisine from the indigenous community has been lost. That is so far from the truth. They actually number more than most people think. Let me try to explain… I guess I can be a bit strange. My family and friends tell me all the time just how picky I can be. My sister took me to an Indian restaurant just a few days ago. It was a very different experience for me. I am the type of person who does not like change. I enjoy having things a certain way. So, when it comes to trying a different ethnicity of food, I will usually pass. But, my sibling was persistent, and to her credit, I can now say I have tried something else.

My tastes lean more toward hamburgers, fried chicken, and mashed potatoes. So, I was not in store for this experience. I felt a little intimidated when I opened the menu. I almost felt as if I should turn and run out the restaurant. I decided to let my sister order for me. I would soon find out just what authentic Indian restaurant cuisine is all about! Goodness, help me not be nauseated.

I get warm inside when I know one of my favorite courses (tortillas) is ready for my plate. I also love the tenderloin of beef and squash (Butternut) which is very flavorful! I can just close my eyes and imagine the smooth taste of this dish upon my tongue. There is also a stew made with beans, corn, zucchini and summer squash that will knock off your socks! This is making me hungry!

Another admired dish is fry bread. In some regions it is called "squaw" bread. In some places honey is poured over the finished course. Other ways to enjoy fry bread are with powered sugar, cream, or even with simmered stew. However one likes it, eating this mouth watering fare will make your tongue crave more!

"Beef Nachos" is made with tortillas (made of corn) and a wonderful assortment of savory coverings. The elements can be: rice, green peppers, garlic, onions, beef, tomatoes, beans; the list goes on and on. Finally, a thick, hot stream of cheese is lavished on top. God! This is yummy beyond belief! You will absolutely want to have a nice, empty stomach when you tackle this dish!

American Indians were very smart in knowing which foods were safe to eat or not. Persimmons, buffalo, potatoes, and yes, cocoa were daily foods for the First Americans. Corn, tomatoes, turkey, squash and acorns were foods found here when the first Europeans arrived. We need to thank the Native Indigenous peoples of this land for the great knowledge we learned from them! My tummy would be so lonely without these morsels!

My tongue is a stubborn individual. It sure enjoys trying new tastes and textures. It craves Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and foods from Thailand. It also craves Greek, German and East Indian cuisine. I am in no way an expert. But, my mouth knows what it likes. I must admit, American Indian food is probably my single favorite. My tongue does not tell me a lie. So, please do not be offended. This is just my opinion!

I have been in many exotic places in my life. I served overseas and never took the time to try any of the dishes from those countries. I am ashamed to reveal my shallowness. I thought only American food tasted the best. My choices were few and my flavors too simple. Now, I can say with confidence that all people should try the tastes of the world. I have begun my journey. It is not too late for you, either. Have a terrific adventure as you eat your way across the world!
